...Can you see the caterpillar in the flower? Milk weeds provide food and a home for the monach caterpillar. We allow patches of milkweed to grow among our gardens to attract butterflies and give a home to the beautiful monarch.
Inside the bioshelter
.....the second floor.........
The bioshelter at Three Sisters Farm was built in 1988 with funding assistance from The Pennsylvania Energy Office.Funding ultimately originated from a federal lawsuit to recover oil overcharges from major oil companies. The partners of Three Sisters Farm contributed matching funds in cash and labor and bank loans.
The bioshelter integrates many farm components into one building.
These include: Greenhouse, poultry housing, potting room, seed and tool storage, an equipment storage "barn", a kitchen for packing produce, compost bins, a reference library and living spaces. The bioshelter is integrated into the landscape with wind breaks, garden access, poultry yard and in many other ways. ( see gardens )

.....Chickens in the greenhouse! We keep a small flock of chickens in the poultry room, in the north east corner of the bioshelter. The chickens eat garden and greenhouse wastes and add carbon dioxide and body heat to the greenhouse. Fresh bedding is added daily to keep the smell fresh. Most of the year the flock has free access to the outdoor poultry yard. The rooster's crow definitely adds atmosphere to the bioshelter. In the winter a vent fan blows air from the poultry room to rock storage under the greenhouse growing beds.

In these gardens we rotate crop plants for our subcribers and other customers. In addition we are always working on our perennial gardens, the1000sq.ft.circle Medicinal garden and the 1000 sq ft. spiral herb and flower garden.
